Installing Wood Fence Posts
If you are going to build a fence, you should know that wood fence posts are the most important aspect. They provide stability and are the foundation of any fence. The key when constructing wooden fences is to install the posts correctly. Therefore, it is important to take your time and install your fence posts correctly. The first step is choosing what kind of wood you want to use. Go for a quality hardwood like cedar or redwood. Use a wood preservative on the portion of the post that will be underground. For the rest of the post, as well as the entire fence, you'll want to either use a weatherproof stain or a paint designed for outdoor use, coated with a protective clear varnish.
When it comes to digging the holes for your posts, you may want to go with a piece of machinery known as a power auger to do the job for you. You can rent this type of machine from any hardware rental store so you don't have to go to the expense of purchasing it outright. The posts should be spaced between 6' to 8' apart, and there should be the same amount of space in between each post. The depth of the hole you'll need to dig should ensure that one-third of the post is buried in the ground and allow for approximately four inches of sand or gravel. For the corner, end, and gate posts, you will use concrete to fill the post hole. The proper amount of concrete for these holes in approximately six inches.
Towards the end of your project when you are filling the post holes with soil, you should make sure the soil is slightly sloped away from the post so that rainwater drains away from the post rather than running towards it. Another way to avoid water damage to your posts is to make sure the tops of the posts are slanted, rounded or capped to allow rain water to run off. These small adjustments can ensure your fence stays in prime condition for years to come.
After you've installed your wood fence posts, the next step is to install the rails. How you will do this will depend on what style fence you've chosen. Wooden fences come in all different styles. There are simple fences designed to provide a basic boundary for your property, then there are more ornate fences that not only provide a boundary but are decorative as well. Another popular style of fence is the privacy fence. A privacy fence is nice around a pool area or ideal for protecting your entire backyard from the prying eyes of nosy neighbors.
