A Brief Guide to Wood Fence Hardware
![]() |
Although the most important part of wooden fences is the wood, you will find that wood fence hardware is also important. The hardware serves a practical purpose because it is what allows you to open and close your gate. Not only that, but hardware can serve a decorative purpose as well. There are different looks, materials and styles available in stores today, so be sure to shop around before choosing the best hardware for your fence. You will find many different choices at hardware and home improvement stores like ACE, Lowe's, Home Depot and more. You may even want to shop online for your fence building materials and hardware.
You might want to go for a gate set. This means that everything you need for your gate, except the wood, comes included. For example, a modern style walk gate hardware set will include rust proof heavy duty hinges, a latch which includes a striker bar and receiver, a gate handle and the mounting screws necessary to install the hardware. There are other styles as well, such as the traditional walk gate set. This includes many of the same materials except the latch is a paddle latch and the ornamental handle is styled differently. If you are building a gate for a ranch or you prefer a country western look, there are sets that offer this style as well.
Of course, you can purchase all your hardware separately rather than in a kit. This is a good choice if you want control over each individual aspect. You'll find hinges, handles, drop rods, gate closing devices, latches and more. You may also want to purchase post caps for your wooden posts. The latches are where you will find the most variety. There are magnetic latches, gravity latches, side pull latches, vertical pull latches, top pull latches and more. Choosing which type is best is a matter of evaluating your preferences, needs and what kind of fence you have.
Wood fence hardware is an important part of any fence, so choose wisely. The good news about these parts is that they are often affordable and come in many different types and configurations. If you are using a contractor to build your fence you may want to ask your contractor about the different types of hardware there are to choose from. Your contractor should take your preferences into consideration when it comes to the look and operation of your fence and its necessary hardware.
